First Annual Promoting Excellence Equine Foot Symposium

The Veterinarian/Farrier Relationship in

Managing the Performance Horse

16 CE Hours

August 8-9, 2008

Providing 16 hours of continuing education, individual presentations by nationally-known farriers and veterinarians will be complemented by discussion-based panel presentations.  Held at the World Center Marriott in Orlando on August 8-9, 2008, the focus of this symposium will be the veterinarian-farrier relationship.  Maintaining optimal performance for elite equine athletes requires open communication and the knowledge base of both the farrier and the veterinarian.  The First Annual Promoting Excellence Farrier's Symposium will provide a wealth of information designed to engage both farriers and veterinarians.

FAEP Promoting Excellence Symposium

Location: Rio Mar, Puerto Rico

The AAEVT is very excited to be able to participate in the FAEP “Promoting Excellence Symposium” meeting in Puerto Rico in September. This will be our “kick off” Advanced CE meeting for our Specialty Society members. We have initiated the process to establish a Society for specialty recognition in Equine Veterinary Nursing – the AAEVT Society for Equine Veterinary Technicians and Nurses. Nurse is a term used and widely recognized in Europe, and we have had interest in our Society from the British Veterinary Nurses Association, as well as BEVA. This Society will be only for those who are credentialed.

October 31 - November 2, 2008

Location: University of Florida / EquiTransfer

2008 Dentistry Wet-Lab

15 CE Hours

The FAEP is pleased to announce a new event for 2008:  the FAEP Promoting Excellence Dentistry Wet-Lab.  Join several nationally-renowned speakers as they focus on current equine dentistry issues.  The intimate, hands-on setting will be conducive for maximum participation by each practitioner.

The Dentistry Wet-Lab will begin with a series of lectures on Friday, October 31 at the University of Florida.  On Saturday, November 1, wet-lab instructors will lecture and demonstrate various dental techniques in the morning.  After lunch, participants will be invited to implement those techniques in the anatomy lab at the University of Florida.  These 2 days are limited to 40 participants.

On Sunday, November 2, transportation will be provided for 20 participants to continue the wet-lab in Ocala with further demonstration and practical hands-on experience on live horses.

Dr. Jack Easley

Radiology

Radiology has become an important part of the total oral and dental equine examination.  The first objective of this portion of the wet-lab is to show how every practitioner, with commonly available radiology equipment used in the field, can take and interpret good dental radiographs.  The second objective is to show how dental radiology can augment the oral examination to diagnose and develop a plan for horses with various types of dental diseases and abnormalities.

Dr. Mary Delorey

Occlusal Equilibration

Many practitioners are becoming comfortable with the basics of occlusal equilibration.  However, two common malocclusions continue to present a challenge to the equine practitioner:  "wave mouth" and "diagonal incisor malocclusions."  Diagnosis, evaluation, and corrective techniques will be presented and applied to both cadaver heads and live horses.  Other equilibration issues may be discussed as time allows.

Dr. Michael Q. Lowder

Sedation, Dental Anesthesia & Pain Management

Sedation augments a complete oral examination.  In addition, anesthesia and pain management are important components of veterinary dentistry.  The objectives of this wet-lab section are to demonstrate sedation for dental procedures including continuous rate infusion (CRI), dental anesthetic nerve blocks, and to discuss indications for pain management.

Dr. B.A. Rucker

Incisor Shaping & Periodontal Disease

Measuring incisor distance to molar contact is important for determining if molar contact duration during mastication is normal and for objective assessment for shortening normally- and abnormally-shaped incisors. Periodontal disease is a common disorder of the equine mouth; diagnosis and treatment options will be discussed.
