Wet-Lab will have four "stations" with two hours per topic

(20 minutes at the start for lecture).

The topics are:

Dr. Patrick McCue

 Embryo Flushing/Transcervical Transfer

Embryo transfer is now a common clinical procedure in equine veterinary practice.  The first objective of this lab is to review management of the donor mare and techniques to maximize the successful collection of embryos from normal and problem mares.  The second objective is to review techniques involved in the nonsurgical transfer of embryos and options for management of recipient mares.

Dr. Edward L. Squires

  Embryo Processing, Evaluation/Grading & Vitrification

Identification, grading and measuring equine embryos is important to predict the potential pregnancy rate upon transfer or to communicate with the veterinarian if the embryo is to be shipped. With the recent acceptance of frozen embryos there is a demand from Veterinarians to know the techniques for vitrification of embryos. This lab will focus on these procedures.

Dr. Dickson D. Varner

Semen Evaluation and Processing Techniques

Proper evaluation of semen improves prognostication of stallion fertility and correct semen-processing techniques are necessary for prolonging the fertility of cool-transported semen. A variety of advanced laboratory techniques can be used to improve accuracy and consistency of semen analysis. Similarly, newly developed procedures can be used to enhance sperm viability following cooled transport and, in some instances, even improve semen quality prior to shipment.
The objective of this laboratory is to introduce participants to methods and equipment required to accomplish these goals.

Dr. Charles C. Love

Urethroscopy of the Stallion and Ultrasound Evaluation of the Internal & External Genitalia

Lab is intended to provide hands on experience using the ultrasound to examine and measure the stallion testes as well as evaluate the internal genitalia of the stallion. All participants will also learn urethroscopy and examine the urethra and internal genital organs through the urethra.

Urethroscopy will be performed on on a stallion tract that will allow all participants to perform the procedure.
