Letter From The 2008 President

For our inaugural FAEP student members, the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners would like to thank you for your support and belief in our mission.

There has been a need for a student chapter in an organization such as the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners for years. The upcoming year will be nothing short of spectacular for our student members. The FAEP Student chapter will also have meetings which will include YOUR peers speaking about YOUR industry – learn about practical things not being covered in the classroom setting.  The FAEP would like to assist you in becoming the best equine practitioner you can be by giving you the proper tools!  The Florida Association of Equine Practitioners recognizes that you are the future of our industry and with this in mind, every student member of the FAEP will get their first year membership (after graduation) FREE!

We would like to formally thank our inaugural President, Dr. Rob Boswell (UF Graduate) from Palm Beach Equine Clinic, for his foresight and determination in getting this organization off the ground.  The biggest surprise was the speed in which it began to evolve.  Those of us involved at the board level see an unlimited future.

As incoming President, the first objective is to set goals for the coming year, including those for our future – you, our students!  The immediate goals are not just to maintain the current level of growth, but to expand into other areas.

The FAEP will continue to work hard to ensure great things for our student members.  It will be an exciting year to come!

Sincerely,

Dr. Craig Roberts

President

UF Student Appreciation Day

Following the success of last year’s outing, the FAEP is once again sponsoring a Student Appreciation Day for veterinary students with an equine interest who are currently attending the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.  Expanding on last year’s program to include two full days of wet-lab activities, five private veterinary practices have graciously agreed to provide hands-on experience for the students.  In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit a well-known Ocala Thoroughbred farm.

During each day, one-third of the students involved in the UF Student Appreciation Day will be present at each practice during each session time.  As we found last year, this will provide all students with unparalleled hands-on opportunities that are invaluable to developing specific skills in many facets of veterinary medicine.  The FAEP is very happy to be able to offer this opportunity to UF students for a second year!

With US breeding farms in Ocala, Florida and Midway, Kentucky as well as a station in Canada (Aurora, Ontario), Adena Springs won the Eclipse Award as Champion Breeder for 2007, the first time in history one breeder won this award four years in a row.  The farm has bred and/or campaigned more than 200 stakes winners, including winners of two of the three US Classic races and all three classics in Canada.  During their visit to the farm, students will be given a tour of the farm and they will have the opportunity to observe young Thoroughbreds in race training, providing an inside look at the day-to-day workings of a large Thoroughbred breeding and training farm.

Equine Medical Center of Ocala

This state-of-the-art equine hospital provides board-certified specialist services in surgery, reproduction and internal medicine, in addition to a staff of general veterinary practitioners.  Dr. Patrick Worden and Dr. Lisa Hinder are UF graduates, while Dr. Rob Franklin, Dr. Aric Adams and Dr. Adam Eichelberger completed medicine, surgery and theriogenology residencies at UF, respectively.  Dr. Joanie Palmero is a UF graduate completing her internship year at EMCO.  Time spent at this practice will allow students to develop further skills in performing ultrasonographic examinations.

The largest equine reproductive facility in the southeastern US, this practice is owned by UF graduate Dr. José R. Dávila.  For the wet-lab experience, students will be provided mares on which rectal palpation skills can be practiced.  This session will provide students with a review of the anatomy of the caudal abdomen as it relates to both reproductive and gastrointestinal structures.

The veterinary staff at this large private practice provides both routine and surgical referral veterinary care to the greater Ocala area, with a particular emphasis on the needs of training and racing Thoroughbreds.  Dr. Sam Ferguson and Dr. Carlos Perez are UF graduates, Dr. Greg BonenClark completed a surgical residency at UF, and Dr. Maria Cadario is a previous UF faculty member.  During their visit at this practice, students will be provided horses on which joint injections and nerve blocks (the low volar or “low 4-point”) can be practiced.  Through this experience, students will be reviewing the musculoskeletal and neurovascular anatomy of the distal limb.

Ocala Equine Hospital

This surgical referral center treats elective surgical cases and orthopedic emergencies with a full range of advanced surgical and diagnostic equipment.  OEH also provides ambulatory services for emergencies, preventative care, lameness, reproduction, radiography and general medical care.

Three of the four practice owners, Dr. Bob Bloomer, Dr. Kent Cantrell and Dr. Armon Blair, are UF graduates, while several associates and one of the current interns also graduated from UF.  Diagnostic imaging techniques, specifically radiology, will be presented to the students during their time at this practice.  Students will have the opportunity to develop further skills in obtaining diagnostic radiographs.

This state-of-the-art equine clinic provides a full range of veterinary services through a large contingent of ambulatory practitioners as well as a busy referral hospital caseload.  Dr. Carol Clark completed her medicine residency at UF and Dr. K. Ryan Meeks graduated from UF.  The Sports Medicine Department will be the primary focus of the students’ visit at this practice.  Upper airway endoscopy, high-speed treadmill examination and nuclear scintigraphy will be practiced and discussed to provide students with the opportunity to experience a full performance evaluation.
